Edie Flowers, b.1994, studied sculpture at Camberwell College, London, and Complutense, Madrid. Born in London and raised in the Lake District, Edie found her way into the art world by process of elimination of other careers. She now works in London having graduated amidst the current pandemic. Predominantly a sculptor, Edie also works in ink, paint, and written works.
These works are permitted to act as representation of my life as an artist right now. ‘Sheltered’ represents fragile, tender moments between spaces, where ‘Double Crossed’ begs an urgent need for comprehension and grounding. I took inspiration from generations of sculptors who lent themselves to the craft of “useful objects” in order to have the funds to operate as a sculptor in the rest of their time, relatively the process of making something “functional” has been a therapeutic process for me that I was not expecting. “Double Crossed” is a candelabra which served purpose to me not only as a means to an end, but a springboard post education to rip down the “rules of being an artist” which manifests in contemporary art schools. The form and the process by which it was made are coherent with other sculptural forms I am experimenting with, adjacent to this ‘Sheltered’ is an entirely figurative piece which offers a calm moment, under a tree or a bus stop, to its audience.
