Smile by Mr Solo
Le Document is thrilled to unveil a preview of Mr Solo’s rendition of the song, Smile which was made famous by Charlie Chaplin. A version of the track recorded by Jimmy Durante in 1965 for his Hello Young Lovers LP featured on the soundtrack to the recent hit movie, The Joker.
Other singers who've recorded versions include; Nat King Cole, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, Neil Sadaka, Perry Como, Stevie Wonder, Sammy Davies Junior, Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Barbera Windsor, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Grace Kelly, Dionne Warwick & Placido Domingo, Seal, Shirley Bassey, Englebert Humperdinck and Lady Gaga.
Mr Solo releases his version in the same month that Gabrielle releases hers. Gabrielle’s version (which isn’t as good as Mr Solo’s) appears on her new, Do It Again LP released on BMG. Mr Solo’s version appears on his third album, I Owe You. Mr Solo has been described as the "dislocated shaman of the village disco."
This video features a 1 minute edit of Mr Solo’s track and images from an art exhibition of work designed to cheer up people who aren’t enjoying Lockdown. When Chaplin was given an honorary Academy Award he also received a 12 minute standing ovation, we hope is that when you see this video promo you’ll want to stand up and cheer for even longer.
