This painting will feature in a group show called ‘Through the Mirage’ featuring artists who make analogue work that is influenced by the digital, at the Fitzrovia Gallery from 17th to 20th November. The private view will be on Friday 19th November from 6pm to 9pm.
My paintings are dictated by simple mathematical rules or algorithms. Patterns evolve according to an internal logic which is chosen at the outset and allowed to play out sequentially, shifting rhythmically across the picture surface, weaving in and out of synch and finding moments of tension and harmony.
I often work freehand in paint and ink over a carefully drawn grid, encouraging elements of accident and chance within the otherwise rigid structure of the work.
Inspiration comes from a preoccupation with sequences and progressions where change (rather than simply repetition) is fundamental. I am fascinated by pattern in art, media and crafts from minimal and generative art to woven textiles to computer games and digital images. Minimal and process music, such as Steve Reichs phasing patterns and canons are also a strong influence.
My pictures can often be ‘read’, for example from left to right. However, the aim is that the viewer can also step back and apprehend an overall effect, and that the experience of the work can fluctuate between these two states.
