Peter Cook badge: You fill me with inertia

By Harry Pye

The You fill me with Inertia Badge was worn in the 1990s by members of The Peter Cook Appreciation Society (who sometimes called themselves Peterphiles). You fill me with Inertia came from a line in the Pete and Dud film, Bedazzled.

One of the many famous fans of that film was John Lydon of The Sex Pistols who was interested in getting Cook on board when the Pistols made their Great Rock and Roll Swindle movie.

In the late 70s, after Dud broke up the partnership to live in Hollywood, Pete hosted a live music show called, Revolver.

In the 60s Pete and Dud enjoyed chart success with a single of Goodbye (the theme tune of the TV show, Not Only, But Also).

In the 1980s, a sample of Peter Cook saying, ‘Voodoo Ray’ featured heavily in a dance track by A Guy Called Gerald.

After Cook's death, Stephen Fry paid tribute by describing him as an ‘extraordinary genius’ and ‘the most influential comedian of his generation.’

‘For him, comedy was like beauty — he couldn’t turn it off,’ Fry said. ‘Peter would be as funny with the guy selling him a newspaper as he would with a chat-show host.’
